Agrofuels and land distribution: Towards a rights based approach to food security

Interest in biofuels has increased explosively in recent years. This Both ENDS Policy Note analyses the effects the existing biofuels policy has on the environment and on poverty. The production of biofuels contributes to climate change and puts pressure on local communities' land rights. The disappearance of ecosystems and the violation of land rights are causing a deficiency in agricultural land, which contributes to the existing food shortage and poverty.

This Policy Note argues that biofuel policy should take people's rights into account. That is the only way biofuels can be produced in a socially and ecologically sustainable way.
