Boeren in Niger hebben meer dan 5 miljoen hectare van de zuidelijke Sahel provincies Maradi en Zinder in groen gebied veranderd. Ze deden dit doormiddel van het beschermen en assisteren van spontane regeneratie van bomen in en rondom hun landbouwvelden. Van 12 tot 20 januari vergezelde Both ENDS collega Marie José van der Werff ten Bosch, Chris Reij (CIS, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) naar het zuiden van Niger om te ontdekken hoe boeren in staat waren op zo'n grote schaal te vergroenen, en hoe hun ervaringen andere dorpen in de Sahel positief kunnen beïnvloeden. Both ENDS, VU-CIS en de Centre Régional d'Enseignement Spécialisé en Agriculture (CRESA) hebben een gezamenlijk project om deze aanpak te verspreiden naar de Dogondoutchi regio.
