Veel landen ondersteunen investeringen in fossiele brandstoffen in het buitenland via hun exportkredietverzekeraar (EKV). Dit draagt bij aan zogeaamde carbon lock-in, waarbij bedrijven of zelfs landen, om de investering terug te verdienen, zolang als de levensduur is van zo'n project, CO2 blijven uitstoten. Dat gaat vaak zelfs om perioden van decennia. Dit vertraagt de overgang naar hernieuwbare energiebronnen ernstig en is in strijd met met art. 2.1c van de het klimaatakkoord van Parijs.
Dit side-event gaat in op de gevolgen van exportfinanciering voor fossiele projecten in het mondiale Zuiden. Daarnaast worden concrete aanbevelingen gegeven om exportkredietverzekeraars CO2-arm te maken.
