Multinationals driven solely by profit, which inflict harm on people and the environment in countries where regulations do not provide sufficient protection, are incomprehensible to me. This realisation began during my graduate studies when I immersed myself in McDonald’s and its negative impact on animal welfare, human rights, health, and the environment.
Despite all the great initiatives on human rights and climate, I believe the root cause of many problems lies in our way of life and the system we have collectively built. Companies grow larger and are driven solely by profit, while the world becomes a global village.
Addressing these kinds of problems and pursuing a fair, sustainable world requires a multidisciplinary, system-changing approach that tackles the significant influence of trade, policy, and finance. This is precisely what Both ENDS pursues.
I find it very motivating to work at an organisation that operates in this manner, investigating and addressing abuses with major consequences. I also appreciate the solidarity: the extensive partner network gives people under pressure the feeling that they are not alone.
In my communication role, I promote this work with full conviction, hoping to inspire and motivate others as well.

Both ENDS's response to government letter on future cooperation with civil society organisations
DEN HAAG, 11 November 2024 - Today, the Dutch government published its policy on future cooperation with development organisations, both in the Netherlands and abroad. PVV minister Reinette Klever is putting the axe to this funding: she has decided to cut the budget for aid to international civil society by more than two-thirds: from roughly €1.4 billion to €0.4 billion in the period 2026 to 2030. This has major implications for critical voices at home and abroad, at a time when civic space for organisations around the world is already shrinking. Karin van Boxtel, director of environmental and human rights organisation Both ENDS: ‘This is an unprecedented step in exactly the wrong direction. Civil society organisations are essential for sustainable and social change worldwide. International movements fulfil multiple, indispensable roles: as a watchdog of the rule of law, as a driver of change, and as a counterforce against authoritarian tendencies. The weakening of support for these roles is a telling signal.’
