Making strategic impact: Shifting resources and power to women-led initiatives for Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN)

How donors, foundations and other funders can better support women-led initiatives in achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), focusing on challenges, collaboration, and opportunities for improved matchmaking.

Women’s initiatives and efforts to for instance restore land, implement agroecology, or protect land rights, are critical to achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), fighting climate change and advancing biodiversity. However, numerous and complex structural barriers and power dynamics hinder 1) adequate resourcing and local women leadership, and 2) building systems change approaches to drive urgent, just implementation of women’s rights that link to and catalyze progress on LDN and climate action.

While development institutions, philanthropic partners and global implementers increasingly recognize the imperative to resource women-led initiatives on LDN and local leadership within the women’s rights movement, challenges to increase direct support and to reform funding approaches persist.

The conversation in this side event will explore how funders (bilateral and development donors, multilateral funds, or foundations) can more effectively engage with women-led initiatives and actions aimed at achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN).

We will examine how these initiatives, particularly in areas like land rights and agroecology, develop, and what kind of support they require, and what successful collaboration should look like. We will also explore the factors that influence the operations of funders, identifying the challenges in aligning funding with women-led initiatives. Finally, we will discuss opportunities for better matchmaking between funders and these initiatives.

The side event will provide concrete recommendations for funders, intermediary grant-making organisations, and civil society organisations (CSOs) that support women-led initiatives and actions on LDN.
